ABSTRACT

Most babies born in this country are delivered by midwives. The proportion on this survey was three-quarters. It was two-thirds of the induced labours, just over three-quarters of those that started spontaneously. So, while midwives do not have responsibility for initiating induction, they have wide experience of both induced and non-induced labour and the aftermath. What are their views of the advantages and disadvantages of induction? How do their views and experiences compare with those of obstetricians? To try to answer these questions, 388 midwives working in hospitals where the mothers in the study had their live babies were interviewed.
