ABSTRACT
Literati regarded certain arts, especially music, poetry, calligraphy, and painting, as stemming from the same impulses and serving consanguine purposes. Here too there are comparisons to be drawn with the West, such as the Renaissance paragone and Lessing’s discussion of poetry and painting in Laocoön.
