ABSTRACT

Today, race, class and conservatism are critical issues, and this investigation has attempted to bring them into clear focus. In doing so we found these seemingly disparate topics to be intricately connected. In fact, our initial objective, of evaluating conservative propositions on race, could not proceed until we specified the interaction between racial inequality and class stratification. Therefore Chapter 1 was devoted to an interpretation of class. We combined several approaches to derive a final synthesis which was then used to examine the contemporary nature of stratification in black society. Once accomplished, we addressed a key topic of debate: that is, the relative position of class and race in the life chances of blacks.
