ABSTRACT
The East Midlands is a relatively large and diverse region. It has a varied and pleasant, predominantly rural landscape, but also contains a number of large towns and cities including Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Lincoln and Northampton. These provide the main foci of economic and social life but, unlike other UK regions, none of them is of such size and dominance that it provides a single focus for the whole region.
