ABSTRACT
The considerable contention and sensationalism surrounding Islamism make its study difficult. The use of Islamic terms and symbols to convey diverse meanings and to serve different political objectives further complicates matters. Nevertheless, politics and religion intersect in the Middle East in two main ways: one aims to maintain the status quo; the other to undermine it.
