ABSTRACT
In Malaysia, political Islam has taken on characteristics quite different from those of its counterpart in Indonesia. Whereas in Indonesia national identity has been defined in non-religious terms, Malaysia defines itself as an Islamic country. The political debate within the dominant Malay community is therefore not whether Malaysia should be a secular or an Islamic state, but what kind of Islamic state it should be.
