ABSTRACT

It is recognised that a good understanding of what makes systems work - and by extension what may be wrong when they do not work - is essential background education for vehicle technicians. This essential background knowledge is known as ‘underpinning knowledge’. A good guide to the background knowledge that is required for work on vehicle electronic systems is to be found in the City & Guilds of London syllabus 383-50. This syllabus is entitled ‘Competence in servicing, adjustment and checking of vehicle electronics; repair by replacement or mod-ification’. The material presented in this chapter is based on this syllabus. Not every item in the syllabus is covered however, only those which the author feels will be most beneficial to readers of this book and its stated purpose.
