      ABSTRACT

Miss Graham looked like a fanatical prophetess. Everything indicated that she was above the oldfashioned conception of beauty and grace and had a complete contempt for it. I thought barking girls . . . this is not only a suit of grief but a suit of hatred as well. I began to pity the young girls who were distorting not only their bodies but also their souls. All that I saw was ugly in form and hateful in spirit. The feet were placed in any way at all, the toes usually turned in. Miss Graham suddenly turned to me and said, 'You don't know anything about body movements' . . . . After much discussion, John Martin who presided, looked at his watch. 'Mr Fokine,' he said, 'we cannot continue this argument. Ballet has had its chance of saying what it had to say during three centuries, so the modern dance has a right to talk for three weeks.'
