ABSTRACT
Ataturk’s revolution had left the Turkish army as the ultimate guardian of the republic, but effectively separated it from direct responsibility for government. In 1960 this tradition was dramatically broken when the army intervened to overthrow an elected civilian administration. To explain how this turn about occurred, political changes during the post-war period need a brief examination.
