ABSTRACT

The effects of the physical environment and the working conditions which it provides have long been of interest to industrial and commercial organisations. Working conditions, particularly those which affect the health, safety and welfare of employees, are the subject of legislation (see, for example, Ruff, 1981). Factors which contribute to the performance and satisfaction of employees, to communications and organisational effectiveness have been investigated in numerous studies, in the search for those designs and conditions which maximise the efficiency or productivity of factories, offices and other workplaces (Sundstrom, 1987).
