ABSTRACT

The name of the language, Tigrinya (tagranna), is the Amharic nisbe from the name of the Tigre province (in various European sources the spellings Tigrinya, Tigrifia and Tigrigna may be found). The language has often been called Tigray (Tigrai) with the Tigrinya genitive suffix. Needless to say these names should not be confused with Tigre.
