ABSTRACT
Much has been written about the meaning and origin of the word 'Permian'. The controversy began in the nineteenth century and to this date no one explanation has found general acceptance. Here there is space for only a very brief survey of the various theories. It is advisable to begin with the facts and then proceed to the hypotheses.
