LANGUAGE AND SEXUALITY Freud learns to interrupt the flow of language to allow more reality to enter. Sometimes it is through the entrance of unrecognised feelings that reality is felt. He understands how emotions and feelings can operate at an unconscious level and so beyond our conscious awareness. This was an important discovery that helped question the hold of a rationalism that insists that reasons we are aware of provide the 'causes' for our behaviour.! This connects to a particular vision of masculinity that identifies masculinity with reason, and forms the control men often assume themselves to have in relation to their experience. Since as men we learn to account for our behaviour in terms of reason, we learn to defend oursel ves in similar terms. Since we can explain why we have acted in a particular way, we can make ourselves invulnerable to attempts to explain our behaviour in different terms.
