ABSTRACT

As Head of a Distance Education Department the author had spent several exciting yet exasperating years trying to educate traditional academics into operating in the distance education mode. As some signs of success began to emerge I proposed in 1979 that a formal course of postgraduate tertiary study leading to an award in distance education be developed. The course was to be available to all professional distance educators who wished to broaden the base of their professional knowledge and to improve their performance in delivering their particular academic expertise in the distance education mode. This chapter reports the developments since that time – concentrating in particular on the most recent developments attained in 1991.
