ABSTRACT
Our own experience tells us that families don’t exist in a vacuum. Nor did they in the past. Births, marriages and deaths, the vital events which punctuate and define family life, are and were influenced by biological, social and economic forces. The English environment in 1540 was very different from the English environment in 1920. This chapter plots the long, halting and patchy processes of change.
