ABSTRACT

Although it must be realised that stages 4 and 5 are within the control of the local education authority, it is imperative that teachers in general and the SEN co-ordinator in particular understand the procedures and processes involved as well as their responsibilities within stages 4 and 5. The focus of stage 4 is the statutory assessment of children with SEN, which requires that LEAs will work co-operatively with schools, parents and other agencies, first to determine whether a statutory assessment is necessary, and secondly to complete such an assessment.
