ABSTRACT

The first substantial biography of Herbert, Oley’s ‘A Prefatory View of the Life of Mr Geo. Herbert’, was prefixed to Herbert’s ‘Remains’ (1652). Anonymous on its first appearance, the biography was claimed later by Oley as his own work. On Oley himself, and on the impact of his account on subsequent biographers inclusive of Walton, see above, pp. 9 f.
