The second edition of Herbert’s poetry within 1853 was the labour of the Reverend George Gilfillan, a writer of considerable range. As his introduction clearly attests, Walton’s influence persists – but so does the commendation of Herbert’s literary merit (‘of a very rare, lofty, and original order’). See also above, p. 24.
