ABSTRACT

The third major edition of Herbert’s poetry in the 1850s was prepared by the widely-read Reverend R.A. Willmott, replete with annotation and a number of tellingly pious plates. Reprinted several times thereafter, the edition includes an introduction where the biographical account of Herbert was shaped under the influence of Walton. The extract concerns the poetry, significantly commended for its ‘creative playfulness’. See also above, p. 24.
