ABSTRACT

Extracts from letters of Sir George Etherege (c. 1634–91), James II’s ambassador at Ratisbon, (a) to Lord Middleton on 23 June 1687, (b) to Mr. Guy on 4 August 1687, and (c) to the Duke of Buckingham on 21 October (?) 1689. Dryden and Etherege were old friends. Dryden wrote an Epilogue for The Man of Mode (1676), and sent a jocular verse epistle to Etherege in 1686. For the full texts of these letters, see The Letterbook of Sir George Etherege (1928), ed. Sybil Rosenfeld, pp. 227, 224, 421.
