The close of Garth’s Preface to Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Fifteen Books. Translated by the most Eminent Hands (1717). The translations are by Dryden, Addison, Congreve, Gay, Tate, Garth, and others. Sir Samuel Garth (1661–1719), author of The Dispensary (1699) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, delivered a Latin oration before Dryden’s body, after lying in state at the College for nearly two weeks, was carried to Westminster Abbey on 13 May 1700.
