Theodore Maynard was born in 1890 of English parents in India, became a Roman Catholic in 1913, and from 1920 taught at American Catholic universities. His first book of poems, introduced by Chesterton, appeared in 1915. Both in Our Best Poets (1924) and Commonweal (2 August 1935) Maynard continued to show cautious enthusiasm for Hopkins.

The New Witness, a newspaper edited by G.K. Chesterton, with a strong interest in social reform, was published from 1912 to 1922 (later revived as G.K.’s Weekly: see No. 85).
