Graves (1895–1985) was already a published poet at this date. Laura Riding, b. 1901 in New York City, also a poet, came to England in 1926, and worked with Graves in publishing and writing. In a letter to the Times Literary Supplement, 29 April 1955, Graves claimed that this book really began the Hopkins influence, since it prompted Empson and other academics to take an interest in the poet. However, the distinction could equally well be argued for Richards’s essay in the Dial (No. 36), whose importance was acknowledged by both Leavis and Empson.
