ABSTRACT
The materials printed in this volume follow the original texts in all important respects. Lengthy extracts from the writings of George Gissing have been omitted in most cases; however, whenever they are central to the reviewer's or critic's argument they have been retained. Indications of the omitted quotations are given, so that a reader may refer to Gissing's original texts. Typographical errors in the reviews and articles have been silently corrected, and factual errors made by reviewers have received briefcomment in headnotes or footnotes.
