ABSTRACT

In this chapter we argue that essays can be a valuable way of assessing active learning. We identify different types of essays, suggest some approaches to setting and marking essays and explore some of the issues underlying essay marking. We consider the problem of marking large numbers of essays for summative and feedback purposes and suggest some ways of varying the essay method. Colleagues from subjects that use essays will find Hounsell and Murray (1992) and Hounsell (1995) useful sources of advice.
