ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus upon the assessment of practical work in laboratories although many of the suggestions that we offer may be applied to field work. The chapter begins with a brief review of research on practical work and an outline of how to conduct an audit of a laboratory course. An audit will provide you with a benchmark of the range of learning and assessment tasks of a course. To assist you to extend your approaches to assessment we offer some guidelines on assessing laboratory reports and notebooks and we provide some alternative approaches to the assessment of the outcomes of laboratory work and the way that students work in laboratories.
