ABSTRACT
Having given a general introduction to what BSL is and to its historical and social background, I shall now begin a more technical, linguistic analysis of BSL. This chapter will be concerned with the analysis of BSL at the level of the individual sign, which we can consider to be more or less equivalent to the word in spoken language. The next chapter will then deal with analysis above the level of the sign, or what happens when signs are combined together.
