ABSTRACT

A wit once remarked on the Homeric question, that the poems were not written by Homer but by another man of the same name, and this may likewise apply to some of the Hippocratic writings. There were seven physicians bearing the name of Hippocrates, who lived during the period when this collection was being written. But it is generally conceded that the Father of Medicine was the second of these. He was born in the year 460 B.c. and was supposed to be descended in a direct line from Aesculapius and Hercules.
