ABSTRACT
In order to understand Greek art more is required than the mere contemplation of Greek works of art or the experience of the aesthetic emotions they produce. Admiration, if it is to be justified, demands a knowledge of the spiritual and material necessities which stimulated the artist to create, of his character and his environment and the means of realization at his disposal. Only then has one the right to proclaim the eternal beauty of Greek art and to marvel at the manner in which it has shed its radiance all over the world.
