ABSTRACT

It is still hard to determine which elements in Sumero-Akkadian religion were originally due to the Semitic section of the population, and which belonged to the Sumer-ians. The principal dogmas were established and the ritual elaborated in its main lines by the beginning of history. In cult the Sumerian language was used, even after the disappearance of the race, and the same great gods had their sanctuaries in both regions, but according to tradition those of Sumer were the older, and the first of all to be raised was the Esagil at Eridu on the shores of the Persian Gulf.
