This traditional point of view expresses a theory rather than the actual reality of things. Kshatriya literature and the popular religions offer a very different aspect of native soeiety. The power, and not always the temporal power alone, is held at least as much by soldiers as by a caste of priests. But here we must be on our guard against the errors which we are in danger of making if we rely on our own political notions, developed with reference to our Western history.
