ThenameofIndo-Europeanisgiventoeverylanguage presentingaphoneticandmorphologicalsystemanalogous tothatobservedinsuchtonguesasGreek,Latin,andCeltic. AssoonastheancientbooksofIndianliteraturewereknown, itwasobservedthatOldIndianshowedsimilaritiesto HomericGreek,Latin,andotherlanguagesofEurope. FranzBopp,whostudiedSanskritunderChezyinParis in1812,wasstruckbytheselikenesses,andpublishedin 1816asmallworkinGerman,entitled"OntheSystemof ConjugationoftheSanskritLanguageincomparisonwith Greek,Latin,Persian,andGermanic".Fromthatmomentwe hadanIndo-Europeanfamilyoflanguages.Itisdividedinto severalgroups-Indo-Iranian,Greek,Italo-Celtic,Germanic, Balto-Slavonic,Armenian,andAlbanian.Indo-Iranian, orAryan,isthebranchwhichadvancedfurthesttothe eastoftheregionformerlyoccupiedbythesetongues.Isay "formerly"becauseIndo-Europeanlanguagesarenow spreadallovertheearth-English,French,Portuguese, Spanish,andtherestofthem.
