ABSTRACT

ALARGE number of Jews lived outside Palestine and constituted the Diaspora, or Dispersion. As we already know, various causes had contributed to drive them out of their country at different periods of their history, e.g. foreign rule, so frequently imposed upon Israel; the revolts which had so often rent the nation; the desire which seized many of its children to go and seek their fortune on soil less ungrateful than the stony tracts of Judah; the lure of trade and the thirst for gain.
