ABSTRACT
IT is an established fact that the Roman world underwent a most serious economic upheaval, from the third century and even from the second half of the second century onwards. It is equally certain that this fact involved political and social consequences of the first importance. These we may express by saying that “ the Empire from the third century onwards is a preparation for the Middle Ages ” .
