ABSTRACT
Leaving out of account the Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe at the beginning of modern times comprised only the two states of Poland and Russia, and the former was destined to dismemberment at the hands of the neighbouring powers of Central Europe and of the immense empire which stretched into Asia.
