ABSTRACT

The character of the transition from 'Enlightenment' to its reaction in 'Feeling' may, in relation to our subject, be described in some such terms as these. The transition signified at bottom a rejection of the Cartesian spirit. It had its beginnings in the Rococo, and it ended in a general weariness of 'Culture' and an emotional yearning after Nature, of which Rousseau is generally regarded as the outstanding representative. Here it will be sufficient to note one or two landmarks.
