ABSTRACT
A little later Kampfer also, in his no less well-known History of Japan, described this Oriental art.8 He was followed in 1735 by Du Halde,9 and a wide circulation was obtained by Pere Attiret's letter of 1747, which delighted all garden-lovers with its enthusiastic description of the Chinese Summer Palace Yi.ian-ming-yi.ian.10 (Figure 18 and Figure 19.) This letter in particular gave a further stimulus to the whole movement in England. It was discussed at length in the Lettres d'une Societe of 1751,11 was reproduced in outline by Voltaire,l2 and incorporated by Latapie in his translation of Whately's work on English gardensP All the treatises
which appeared in connexion with the fashion for Chinese gardens had reference to it.
