ABSTRACT
John Middleton Murry (1889-1957), husband of Katherine Mansfield and editor of the Athenaeum 1919-21, was an important figure in the post-war literary generation, with books on Shake speare, Swift, Keats, Lawrence, and others. According to the DNB, a friendly critic described Murry as 'the best-hated man of letters in the country.'
