ABSTRACT
OUR study of drawing and haptic perception showed that the simplest topological relationships such as proximity and separation are also the first to emerge in the course of psychological development. This order of appearance is also maintained when space is treated axiomatically by geometricians. In the realm of psychology it would be true to say that the relation of proximity expresses the most fundamental characteristic of the actions by which the subject generates the notion of space.
