ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the strategic and military dimension of the Asia-Pacific by looking at the complex relations between the three-and-a-half major military powers of the region. These powers are the USA, Russia and China. The half power is Japan because it is still an incomplete military power. It is only by looking at the complex web of relations between these major powers on the one hand, and those between each of these powers and the rest of the Asia-Pacific on the other, that we can understand the tensions in the region, and the prospects for peace and stability.
