As we have seen in the preceding chapter, it was revolutionary France of the late eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries that produced the greatest of the utopian socialists. France, however, was not alone in contributing to this important school of social thought. England followed, with Robert Owen as its most conspicuous example.
