Recent Socialist Thought

In the forties, there was a continuation in socialist and non-socialist literature of the controversy as to whether freedom and social planning were compatible. In 1944, the eminent Austrian economist, F. A. von Hayek, wrote a book, the Road to Serfdom, in which he maintained that freedom was impossible in a planned society. ¹
