ABSTRACT
The analysis of the grounds on which freedom rests is of great practical interest to those who value freedom. For by clarifying these grounds we may hope to make them more secure. By raising questions concerning the nature and justification of freedom, we may try to eliminate some of its ambiguities which have, particularly in our days, laid freedom open to misunderstanding, and worse, to perversion and discredit.
