ABSTRACT
The previous chapters have dealt with each of the settlements as a microcosm within Fiji Indian rural society. The descriptions of important activities have brought in outside factors only in so far as they affected events within the settlement. Thus, the merchants in the town have been mentioned, not in the context of the Fiji-wide economy, but because their existence affected economic and social contacts within the settlement.
