ABSTRACT

Though the peasants had few dealings with townsmen, and could be suspicious of neighbouring peasants differing from them in religion or language, yet their social relations were not entirely restricted to one village. Religion divided, in so far as there were a variety of denominations in one area, but it also formed a bond between village and village belonging to the same denomination. Further, the presence of Moslems tended to some extent to diminish the opposition between Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants.
