ABSTRACT

The uses of a measure of housing quality are many, for it makes possible the control of an important variable in studies of family living, of public health and town planning. For the administrator it makes possible the discovery of the extent of housing problems and the accurate comparison of different areas. For the social worker the method gives a detailed account of all the relevant conditions of the house as well as a total score which permits comparison between cases to be made. The social economist may use the scale when attempting to compare the desirability of expenditure on housing with some other aspect of social provision.
