ABSTRACT
This instrument was first devised as a part of the social researches made by the Wartime Social Survey (now the Social Survey) for the Department of Health for Scotland. These researches were a part of the preparation for two major regional planning surveys, that of Central and South Eastern Scotland directed by Sir Frank Mears, 1 and that of the Clyde Valley directed by Sir Patrick Abercrombie. 2
