Introduction

This is a book about the lives of a group of people living in a Liverpool slum. Although much is said and written about slums, Teddy Boys, problem families and so on, there are comparatively few studies made in which the improved techniques of clinical and social psychology are fully utilized. The descriptive part of the book is based on field work done on the people of Ship Street, a pseudonym given to this particular group.
