ABSTRACT

VISITORS from the country or other more desirable areas can see no reason why anyone should feel any tie to the Ship Street locality. The inhabitants, however, do not appear to feel like this. With surprising uniformity they say that they do not want to leave the neighbourhood. The streets consist of rows of dreary terrace houses which were once occupied by more prosperous tenants. Originally well-built they are now somewhat derelict through lack of repair. There was much bomb damage in the area so here and there are gaps used by the children as playgrounds. Blocks of flats are being built and these streets are gradually being demolished. However, many Mums prefer to stay in their houses, although only two or three rooms may be usable owing to damp. Fifty out of the sixty-one families have been in the neighbourhood all their lives.
