The largest group of people within which agnatic ties are claimed to be traceable genealogically is the ‘extended family’, eowe. 1 The core of this group is a shallow, male lineage, the senior adult members of which have a common grandfather, the founder of the group. These men, together with their wives, sons, sons' wives and children, and unmarried sisters and daughters, make up the total group.
